“Wichita Lineman” by Glen Campbell from Wichita Lineman (1968).

Wichita Lineman

The first existential country song.

(Optiganally Yours cover that shit here.)

Either that or an aural voyeur:

“I hear you singin’ in the wire, I can hear you through the whine
And the Wichita Lineman is still on the line”

Sorry.  Even after all these years, I’m still affected by “The Conversation” and it skews my interpretation of everything.

And I gotta give the existential country crown to Hank Williams (NOT jr).  That’s just me.  But I do love this song.  Lyrically speaking it’s sublimely beautiful.  I like Glenn Campbell’s interpretation too, but that’s just my opinion.  I think the fact that it is well written is beyond reproach.  And if you don’t get that, I’m not sure you’re really human.  Give it a listen.

An interesting side note: This song was actually written by Jimmy Webb, who also wrote “Up, Up, and Away”, “Galveston”, and “Macarthur Park”.

Webb was inspired to write the lyrics when he saw a solitary lineman in rural northern Oklahoma.[4]
